What is SmartStorage® energy storage system?
A SmartStorage® energy storage system is a unique energy storage solution designed to reduce expensive peak demand charges for commercial and industrial buildings. It comes with an innovative 10-year performance guarantee and 10-year operations and maintenance service, both provided with the SmartStorage® Asset Management Service Agreement, an option available for all SmartStorage® system installations.
The SmartStorage® energy storage system combines an intelligent energy management system with cutting-edge hardware, operating seamlessly as a stand-alone solution or when deployed along with a solar electric system. The system employs sophisticated, predictive controls to manage the release of this energy, resulting in high performance, high system efficiency and world-class reliability.
SmartStorage® energy storage systems are available with an optional 10-year Asset Management Service Agreement providing full system maintenance coupled with a performance guarantee. If guaranteed performance is not met, NantEnergy will compensate for the deficit in promised peak demand reductions.
What is Asset Management Agreement Service?
The SmartStorage® energy storage system is available with an optional 10-year Asset Management Service Agreement, which enhances its state-of-the-art intelligent software to provide continuous whole-system remote monitoring, performance tuning and maintenance. With the Asset Management Service Agreement, the SmartStorage® system stays current through automated in-field updates and post-deployment feature additions, all of which allow the system to adapt to a customer's evolving needs. The SmartStorage® system is both predictive and proactive and in most cases the Asset Management Service will resolve a system issue before its customer is even aware of any issue.
What are demand charges?
A commercial utility bill is made up of both energy charges and demand charges. Energy charges are the rate a customer pays based on the amount of kilowatt hours of energy consumed. Demand charges are the rate a customer pays based on the highest amount of power a customer uses during the month (the demand charge is the highest average kW measured in a utility-specified interval, typically 15-minutes, during the billing period). Any sudden increase in power usage can result in a spike in a customer's power usage and increase in their overall energy bill, even if the spike is relatively short in duration. Spikes in power usage can be difficult to predict, making it frustrating and difficult for most commercial/industrial customers to understand what drives their peak demand usage.
Can I get the SmartStorage® system without a solar PV system?
Yes, the SmartStorage® energy storage system can be deployed with or without a solar system. The SmartStorage® energy storage solution can also be deployed on sites with an existing solar installation.
What are the benefits of deploying a SmartStorage® system with a solar PV system?
The SmartStorage® system can firm demand reductions, improving overall solar performance. Likewise, the SmartStorage® system can perform better with integrated solar assets because these solar assets may favorably narrow the site's load peak.
The SmartStorage® system can also make solar installations economically viable where they otherwise would not be. For example, in cases where a site has insufficient space to deploy enough solar PV capacity to benefit from favorable solar utility rates, a smaller PV system co-deployed with a SmartStorage® system can have a favorable ROI under standard utility tariffs.
Finally, by integrating solar with the SmartStorage® solution, building owners and operators may also be able to benefit from a combination of solar tax credits and incentives, in addition to applicable storage incentives.
